| Serampore
is a city and a municipality in Hooghly District of West Bengal.
It is a pre-colonial town in the bank of Hooghly River. It was
one of the parts of Danish India, which was called as Frederiksnagore
from 1755 to 1845.
The name Serampore is originated either from 'Sripur' or
'Sri Ram' or both. It can also be originated from 'Seetarampore'
as there was a very famous 'Ram-Seeta' temple. There are some
aristocratic localities whose inhabitants were Brahmins of
different sects and groups, such as Goswamipara, Lahiripara,
Mukherjeepara, Bhattacharyapara, Chakravartipara etc. Some
places arose according to the names of several classes, such
as Patuapara, Kumarpara, Dhulipara, Goalpara etc. This place's
history is endless.
Serampore is a several centuries old place, which has witnessed
both the growth and decline of feudal system, the coming of
Danes and their settlement and then a cultural renaissance
initiated by the British. Even the construction of the East
Indian Railway along with industrial development occurred
there.
The Jagannath temple of Mahesh is one of the most famous
temples in West Hooghly district. It is still there standing
steadily from 1755. It is also one of the biggest temples
in Hooghly District.
Serampore is a place culture, ethics and education. This
place contains many schools and colleges. Such as Bunch of
flowers, Serampore College, Serampore Girls' High School,
Serampore High School, Serampore Sishu Sikshayatan, Bidhan
Chandra College, Serampore Town Academy, Bakulal Sishuniketan,
Ballavpore High School, Holy Home, West Point Academy, College
of Textile Technology, Little Angels, Mahesh High Schools,
Mahesh Sri Ramkrishna Ashram Vidyalaya, Malina Lahiri Boys
Academy, Nandalal Institution, Parameshwari Balika Vidyalaya,
Ramesh Chandra Girls High School, etc.
Serampore College is one of the best and prestigious colleges
in India. The English missionaries known as Serampore Trio
founded it in 1818. They are William Carey, Joshua Marshman,
and William Ward.
Nowadays this place is developing and improving from every
ways. There are many new industry companies are growing. This
place makes our Hooghly district proud.
