| Konnagar,
the city and a municipality in Hooghly District of West Bengal
was a small town that grew to be a town in the 19th century.
The renowned Derozian and Brahmo leader, Sib Chandra Deb, contributed
towards the development as well as upliftment of Konnagar. There
are 19 wards in the Konnagar Municipal Area, and it lies under
Uttarpara police station in Serampore subdivision. Kolkata Metropolitan
Development Authority also includes Konnagar as one of its part.
Konnagar is situated between Rishra and Uttarpara. It is
located on the west bank of the River Hooghly.To the west
of Konnagar Railway Station lies Nabagram, which is mostly
populated by people who migrated from East Bengal. Konnagar
is very popular for 'Shakuntala Kalia' who is worshipped in
the month of Bashikh (April) followed by a month long Mela(Carnival).
This attracts a lot of worshippers from far away places and
is meant to be very sacred. The unique feature of this puja
is, the idol is created and decorated in one single day and
immersed in the river Ganga, after the puja is over, on the
same day.
Konnagar has been a very historical and ethnical place for
which it has been visited by many well-known personalities
like Rabindranath Tagore, who visited here twice. Once when
he was a child when Dengue had its claws on Kolkata and again
at the age of 19.Other great people like Maheshwata Devi,
Maharshi Debendranath.,Shibram Chakrabarty also visited here.
Konnagar has also been the home of many notable personalities
like great nationalist and religious leader Sri Aurobindo.
The Census of 2011 holds Konnagar to have a population of
around 72,211 in which male constitutes 52% of the population
and females 48%. The literacy rate of Konnagar is 80%, which
is higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy
is 84%, and female literacy is 77%.
Konnagar is also culturally very rich and developed. The
Municipality holds every year a Book fair & an Industrial
Fair.Olympic Club and Friends' Union Club happen to be two
century-old athletics club. The Swimming Club called Konnagar
Swimming Club is also well known.
